Middleham

Middleham was once known as ‘the Windsor of the North’ because of the frequent visits of monarchs and nobles to Middleham Castle and home to Richard III in 1471. It is a picturesque dale town with its own Castle, Parish church, and charming market square surrounded by local pubs, restaurants, shops and the most stunning landscape. Middleham today derives much of its prosperity from the breeding and training of racehorses and there are many well known racing stables in and around the town.

Around Middleham you can experience the vast open space of moorland, listen to the call of the upland birds, walk for miles and miles or sit and watch the world go by along the rivers. You can wander through woods, saunter through picturesque Dales villages of local sandstone or throw pebbles in a stream. All around are the signs of past generations, historic abbeys, embattled castles, churches, crosses, ancient routes, providing some of the best walks in the UK.
